It’s easy to camouflage your roots in between dye jobs with a simple and creative change of style.
My first suggestion is to avoid an exact part; a messy part will minimize the surface area of the unwanted roots. In fact, messy, less-structured hair forms wonderful texture that enhances layers, so your hair doesn’t sit flat on your head. To create a messy effect, blow-dry your hair, sans brush, in the opposite direction of the way it grows, and let it fall naturally.
A hairstyle with volume will also help hide those nasty dark or gray roots. To give your style more oomph, spray a little bit of hairspray onto your fingertips, and rub the roots of your hair where the unwanted color shows. You can also tease the roots with your fingers: With one hand, grab the ends of the hair loosely and, using the thumb and pointer finger of your other hand, grab the hair 1 inch from the roots and pull it down towards the roots.
Avoid hairstyles that involve slicking your hair back into a ponytail or bun, because if the top or sides of your hair are flat, roots are more likely to show. Messy buns are a better alternative; skip the comb to help create this look and, instead, use your fingers as the styling tool. This will automatically shape loose textures and cause flyaways to naturally fall along the sides of your face. These little tricks can hide the appearance of unwanted roots and buy you the time you need until you can schedule a color date.
