PHOENIX — Socially and economically disadvantaged students preparing to attend medical school toured the Maricopa Medical Center as part of the new University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix Pathway Scholars Program.
The Pathway Scholars Program, which began this summer, gives these students a unique opportunity to prove their ability to succeed in medical school at the UA College of Medicine.
The tour of Maricopa Medical Center is designed to give the students a first-hand look at how a busy Level 1 trauma hospital works, meet with physicians, and learn how MMC partners with the UA Medical School – Phoenix in training medical students and physician residents for our future.
As Executive Director of the UA Pathway Scholars Program, Maria Manriquez, MD, said she is proud to be a part of helping students reach their goals of attending medical school.
“This unique program provides an important opportunity for students to receive the extra support they might not otherwise have in order to prepare for the rigors of medical school,” she said,” the program also plays an important role in helping to ensure that we have enough doctors to meet current and future physician shortages.”
