The last time Pachuca played in a final was in 2008 against Pumas, that game finished in overtime. Once again Pachuca played in overtime during the final, this time against Leon. The story was the same for the Tuzos of Pachuca as it fell to Leon by a global score of 4-3.
Pachuca had entered the game with a 3-2 advantage after the first leg of the final. The second game ended in a 2-0 victory for Leon.
Leon started the game very aggressive and attacked strongly. Pachuca’s veteran goalie, Oscar “El Conejo” Perez was brilliant in preventing the score to get out of hand making three crucial saves.
Finally at the 66th minute of play Argentine striker Mauro Boselli scored to take the game into overtime.
Defender Juan Ignacio Gonzalez scored the winning goal in overtime.
“It is crazy out here, I’m very happy, I’m thrilled” said Gonzalez after the game. “We were committed to each other, to our fans and to our families, it is a great feeling,” he added.
Leon played as if there was no tomorrow, it attacked from the beginning, never looking back, at the end it paid off, Leon conquered its second short season title in a row.
Even though Leon was nowhere near the favorite coming into the season, it stuck together and played very strong throughout the Clausura tournament to retain its title.
Leon came into the playoffs seeded eighth, barely making the postseason tournament by having advantage on goals differential with Chiapas. After taking down, the number one seeded team, Cruz Azul, Leon played like the champion it became.
Leon finished the Clausura season with a record of 6-5-6.
Leon became the first repeat champion since Pumas accomplished that feat back in 2004.
