Patricia Batres’ debut as on-air radio talent on April 7th took all but one week of training.
After being a face behind Telemundo news, she takes on a new challenge as co-host of Enlace every Monday – Friday from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. at 1190AM La Buena Onda.
“I had to learn the rhythm (of programming), who is in, who is not, how to edit news bits, … but it’s ok, it’s a challenge. I already got the hang of it and it feels easier, I edited faster, so it’s nice to learn something new and have people teach you new things,” she said.
Transitioning from television to radio was a complete turn for Batres’, but she finds advantages in speaking behind the microphone.
“I am a person that doesn’t like scripts, and that’s why I like radio because I have the opportunity to work around the subject with my own signature,” she said.
Batres hopes to bring the voice of the community into her segments. Compared to a 30-minute TV live newscast, she feels Enlace’s 1-hour daily programming will allow for more interaction with listeners, mainly through feedback received on social media.
“(I hope to) show the community that I can listen to their comments… it would be nice if I can greet those comments from people and get on-air reactions to the main news of the day, and go around it,” she said.
Child abuse is among the topics that Batres hopes to prioritize. She plans on speaking up on the signals to watch out for, and ways to prevent the abuse.
“(We want to) try and prevent these kinds of incidents and give people the tools and the right information so that if you are in a relationship where your partner is abusive to your child, there is something you can do before it gets out of hand,” she said.
Arizona has a high level of abuse, and Batres wants to use her voice on Enlace as advocacy on social issues such as family violence.
As a mom, her two children are her main purpose in wanting to instill in them a passion for news, and inform them on these topics.
“I (try) to get that message through them; that if you work hard – whatever it is that you’re doing – you succeed and people will notice,” she said.
Through her departure from Telemundo in December, she taught her children the importance of maintaining long-term goals.
“I had to teach them (that) I had a great run, I made a career for myself, I made a name for myself, and now I need to get to the next step because life is about steps,” she said.
Batres is a not a believer in planning, but she envisions her future bright with a continuing commitment to her audience.
“You just never know what life is going to bring you, but I would love to have my space, be myself, express myself, and maybe have a show where people feel they are learning something and they are taking something,” she said.
To be part of Patricia Batres’ new chapter in her career, tune in to Programa Enlace all week Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. at 1190AM La Buena Onda.
