A new chic spot for locals lies in Central Phoenix for those who are seeking a new eatery to dine with friends.

The hip Mexican joint plays music from Mana to Vicente Fernández and customers can enjoy authentic artwork painted by the owner’s nephew. The structure inside is a mixture of rustic and modern architecture combined.

There is an antique feel to the eatery as if customers are getting a bit of Italy, France, Spain and Mexico.

The man behind the romantic hot spot is not a new face to the valley.

Without a high school diploma, Obed De La Cruz proudly owns several successful restaurants around Arizona and Mejico Restaurant is his most recent accomplishment.

De La Cruz’s hard work is shown in every aspect of his restaurants, especially at his newest spot. The atmosphere is young, fresh, and the waiters who run the bar are upbeat and personable.

The margaritas are a must. The young bartenders make each drink fresh with no sweet or sour juice added. They are made with fresh-squeezed lime and Tequila.

Customers who sit at the bar will notice a dollar bill that is framed, which represents the first dollar bill that Mejico Restaurant earned.

Dining at Mejico is a treat in itself. Customers are able to enjoy original artwork and order from a unique menu that serves popular dishes from shrimp chiles rellenos to the tostada voladora.

What hooks customers is the freshness of the ingredients, quality product and the famous “mom recipes” intact as each plate is served.

The restaurant makes a backyard Carne Asada, which are typical Carne Asada plates with Tortillas, Guacamole and Salsa. But for customers who drop by around lunchtime, the Tortas de Camaron is also a hit. And for those who do not eat seafood, Tortas can be ordered with pork or even chicken.

“It’s a small and simple menu,” De La Cruz said, “we try to stay away from hard tacos and Chimichangas.”

De La Cruz has the vision of Mejico becoming a place for nightlife with live music that will satisfy every partygoer from every age group.

“I hope to be the talk of the neighborhood,” he said.

As of right now, the eatery is open until 9 p.m., but De La Cruz hopes to one day stay in business until midnight or later.

“I have a passion for it [cooking], it’s in my blood,” he said.

For the man who opened two restaurants in six months, and has left food legacies around the valley, customers can experience a modish Latin environment as they place their orders and sip on fresh margaritas.
