Tucson, AZ – After finishing the season with five straight loses, the Red Raiders of Texas Tech avoided a sixth straight loss by shocking no. 14 Arizona State Monday night in the Holiday Bowl 37-23.
The Sun Devils finished the season with two straight loses. ASU lost to Stanford 38 – 14 in the Pac -12 Championship game.
In every which way the odds were stacked against Texas Tech. First of all their starting quarterback Baker Mayfield left the team and they faced an Arizona State team coming of a great season.
Once the game started the off field problems and the stats were thrown out the window and the game was decided on the field. Texas Tech’s freshmen quarterback Davis Webb was given the responsibility to lead his team to victory. Webb threw for 403 yards and 4 touchdowns (Holiday Bowl Record).
Webb’s favorite target was Texas Tech All-American tight end jace Amaro with eight catches for 112 yards.
Early on Arizona State was limited to two field goals. The first half ended with Texas Tech leading 27 -13. The early scoring frenzy by Texas Tech proved to be too much for ASU.
ASU quarterback Taylor Kelly finished the game with 135 yards on 25 carries, but was limited to only 125 passing yards. The Red Raiders defense did a good job of limiting Kelly as he was sacked three times.
With the victory Texas Tech finished the season with a record of 8-5 and a bowl win, while the Sun Devils finish with a record of 10-4.
